In The Vampire Diaries ep. 208, “Rose,” we meet Elijah, one of the original vampires and Klaus’s brother, for the first time. Immediately, we get the impression that Elijah is not someone to be messed with but that he can be counted on. In fact, Rose had extreme faith in Elijah’s ability to hold up his end of their bargain (doppleganger Elena in exchange for a pardon):
Rose: Elijah you are a man of honor, you should be trusted. But I want to hear you say it again.Unfortunately, when Elijah whacked off the head of Rose’s friend of 500 years, Trevor, we (and Rose) realize that Elijah is a literal man. True, he pardoned Rose and kept his promise but he twisted it around. Flash forward to TVD ep. 222, “As I Lay Dying,” when Elijah visited Klaus at Alaric’s loft to get further details on the whereabouts of their Original siblings:
Elijah: You have my word that I will pardon you.
Elijah: My brother gave me his word that he would reunite me with my own.And in a gutwrenching moment, Klaus made good on his promise to Elijah…by staking him. Turns out, Klaus is literal man too.
Klaus: And so I shall.
Think back to all the times on The Vampire Diaries Season 2 that Elijah was referred to as an “honorable” man. Did he deserve to die at his own brother’s hands or is karma a real bitch after all? Tell us in the comments!
